For me, the Empty Quarter, or Rub’ al Khali, is one of those places. Its name, which means “the empty space,” perfectly captures the vast, seemingly infinite sea of sand that stretches before you. As I stood there, surrounded by endless dunes, I felt invited to explore not only this desert but also the emptiness within myself and the limitless nature of existence. My journey into the Rub’ al Khali was more than a physical expedition; it was an inward voyage. The desert’s silent call reached me, stirring a curiosity that pulled me closer. Every step across those shifting sands was a step into the unknown—not just of a lost city I sought to find, but of the hidden parts of my own soul. The deserted landscape, both desolate and strangely welcoming, became a mirror where I confronted my fears and hopes alike. This is my story of searching for something lost in the vastness of the desert and, in doing so, discovering pieces of myself I never knew I was missing.

The desert, much like the sea, is a place where humans seek a feeling of infinity within the universe. Of course, there’s also the sky, but reaching it and staying there permanently is not for us mortals. That’s why we’ve bravely explored the mysteries of the desert and the sea, while leaving the secrets of the sky to immortal souls.

The endless void of the Rub’ al Khali desert was one of the rare places where I could feel the sense of infinity most closely. It reminded me once again how small, how insignificant, and how utterly alone I was within time and space.

In ancient times, traders on their journeys for wealth were careful to avoid this desert. They saw no sign of life or belief here. Yet, they never gave up searching for the mysterious cities the sands had swallowed, erasing them from the face of the earth. One of these was called Iram (Ubar). All attempts to find it failed, and no one ever reached the Atlantis of the Sands. No trace was left of the civilizations the desert had consumed.

Those who saw the Rub’ al Khali could never forget the sight. They described the world that stretched before them as “another world,” because this desert was unlike any other region on Earth. One of those who found himself in the Rub’ al Khali was the British explorer Wilfred Thesiger. He wrote about his journeys in his book Arabian Sands, published in 1959. Over time, the book became a classic and a go-to reference about the region.

As I gazed at the endless sand dunes of the Rub’ al Khali, I thought of Wilfred Thesiger and saw the desert through his eyes. I remembered some of his unforgettable words: “No one can see this place and continue with their old routine.” I also recalled him saying: “These harsh lands cast a spell on a man that no other climate can. Those who find their way here will never escape the effect of this magic. The mark left deep within their character will shape the rest of their lives.”

Returning from my desert journey with unforgettable memories, the sights were etched deep in my mind. One of them was the sight of trees trying to hold on to life right in front of a giant sand dune. How did they survive on the desert’s salt-crusted ground? How did they endure that heat?

The Rub’ al Khali calls out to curious explorers, inviting them to discover it. The response to this open invitation changes the course of a life. And that’s what happened to me. On my way back, I realized that the emptiness I had once feared was a place that filled my own inner voids. The magic of the Rub’ al Khali had created a new compass inside me. I now knew one thing for certain: The rest of my life would be written with the legends this vast sea of sand had whispered to me.

Kavurucu bir sıcak, tuzla kaplı bir zemin ve hayata sıkıca tutunan bu ağaçlar çölün uçsuz bucaksız sessizliğinde, imkansıza direnen bir yaşam mücadelesini simgeliyor

[13
713,566
post-62221","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gezi","tag-col","tag-rubulhali-colu
["GET
